On our second day in Dorset, the sun decided to peek out from behind the clouds and so we decided we better peek out from behind our duvets and make the most of this glimpse of Summer!
After a hearty breakfast in our hotel The Royal Chase, we raced into the breezy sunshine and down into the centre of the village again. This time we went past the iconic Gold Hill and straight down towards the Abbey ruins.
We were amazed by what we found. Absolute beauty!
Tree lined glorious streets cut into the hillside, looking out over miles and miles of rolling countryside.
After we'd basked in the sunshine for a little while, and tried to start off our summer glow, we thought we'd better do something with our day and explore the culture and history of this little village some more.
So we made our way into the Abbey and learnt all about the Kings of old (well before anything we learnt about at school!) and then later the nuns that took over and tried desperately to keep hold of their home when Henry VIII was trying to take hold of all the religious houses during his reign. Even though Henry VIIIth obviously got his away, what remains is still beautiful and well cared for. There are lines and lines of flowers, herbs and trees, and the Abbey still produces plants and herbs that they sell to visitors.
All of the gardens are guarded now by by King Alfred:
My favourite flowers there were the pansies. Don't you just adore their colourful smiling faces bouncing along in the breeze?!
After soaking up all that history and sniffing all the flowers and herbs that filled the Abbey garden, we found ourselves a tad bit peckish.
Now I think this was hands down my favourite part of the weekend! I think the theme is pretty clear now; I like anything sweet and delicious! Freshly baked scones from The Salt Cellar are just that! And then when you add on fresh cream and strawberry jam ... heaven. My mouth is watering just remembering how these were so warm and just crumbled as I bit into this creamy, sweet, deliciousness. Divine.
I must admit, Shaftesbury well and truly impressed me. I really enjoyed my weekend here and think this is a wonderful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of London. I'm sure I'll come back and visit again some time soon - perhaps a cheeky spa and scones break is due!
